RSVP is in charge of reserving the needed resources, such as bandwidth on an interface, in every intermediate router along the application s data path This reservation is made during session set-up, and if it is successful, the user will receive a dedicated stream of guaranteed fixed bandwidth for the duration of the session Once the session is finished, the reserved resources will be returned to the system QoS specific paths are defined by sending PATH messages from the original host to the destination in a hop-by-hop fashion Upon receiving these PATH messages, the receiver will have to acknowledge QoS reservation at each hop to the sender Receiver acknowledgements are performed via the RESV messages in the reverse direction to the data flow (Figure 43).

RSVP alone is not able to provide a better QoS to a certain user, as it is only a control protocol which sets up a reservation of transmission resources Enforcement of such reservation needs to be performed by some other components of the network architecture This is typically done by making use of routers with sophisticated scheduling techniques, which are able to provide a service level according to the reservations previously done Reservation procedures, management and enforcement of bandwidth consume processing power in the different routers In addition, each router along the patch needs to reserve information concerning the flows to be transmitted through them, as traffic description or address of next RSVP host in the path The amount of this information is proportional to the number of reservations, and in case a router handles tens of thousands of flows, keeping state information can become a problem.
